Our Story

In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, Open Space Education emerged as a transformative force in the field of education. Director Blythe King recognized the need for a new approach and made a bold decision: to take learning outside. Collaborating with groups of elementary and middle school students, Open Space embarked on outdoor expeditions that ignited a deep connection with nature and art.

In the enchanting realm of nature, something magical happened. Students experienced a profound shift in their perception. They discovered that nature is not just a backdrop, but a source of inspiration and wisdom. As their senses awakened, they felt more alive, more observant, and more connected to the world around them. Nature became their muse, fostering imaginative thinking and nurturing the seeds of creativity.

Amid the chaos and uncertainty of the pandemic, Open Space Education became a sanctuary, empowering young minds to embrace creativity as a vital life skill. They discovered that creativity is not confined to art classes but permeates every aspect of life. It is the spark that ignites innovation, the compass that guides adaptation, and the bridge that connects diverse perspectives.

Founded in 2021, Open Space Education quickly established itself as Richmond's beacon of outdoor education and the only organization in the city that combines art education with nature based learning. Its mission goes beyond conventional learning; it aims to create immersive, accessible, and inclusive experiences that bridge the gap between access to art and nature. By collaborating with esteemed teaching artists, Open Space Education forges a unique curriculum that nurtures adaptability, resilience, and creativity—the very foundations of a well-rounded education.

Open Space Education understands the profound impact of nature on a child's development. It aligns with the groundbreaking research of Richard Louv, who emphasizes the crucial role of direct exposure to nature in promoting physical and emotional well-being. By immersing students in natural environments, Open Space Education integrates the joy of play with the rigor of formal education, fostering a harmonious blend of curiosity, exploration, and personal growth.

Open Space Education is more than an organization; it is a catalyst for change. By providing equitable access to Richmond's green spaces, it breaks down barriers and ensures that every child, regardless of their background, can experience the wonders of nature and the transformative power of art. As Open Space Education continues to expand its reach, it nurtures a generation of creative thinkers, environmental stewards, and changemakers who will shape a brighter future for themselves and their communities.
